SME Event – Demonstrations

A series of interactive demonstrations of products, services and technologies, based on the cloud or advanced computing, will be delivered during CF2016. They will include demonstrations of the HOLA CLOUD and AppHub Platforms and the demos selected through the call for demos launched by the conference organisers.

HOLA Portal

Description: The HOLA Portal provides business intelligence and collaborative research insights over the metadata extracted for >0.5M documents for the area of Cloud Computing alone, including: publications; conference proceedings; news and specialized blogs; EU projects and grants from CORDIS and CRIS (Current Research Information Systems) of EU countries (UK,Netherlands,etc) and USA. It helps to find the unknowns, discover cross-industry solutions and related subtopics. It provides automatic entity profile generation, and capability to filter by type of document and entity so that the results are tailored to what the users are looking for. It provides ‘fresh data’ versus the usual analysis of ‘old data’, thus bringing a ‘fresh’ look at what is happening, and who is working on a particular topic. The HOLA Portal can show evolution over time of the topic of interest, and subtopics inside it together with ranking of organizations inside any given topic and subtopic.

Uffizi Touch® Cloud – a new experience with art

Established in Florence in 1999, the company participated to high-end projects involving the conservation and valorization of art and cultural heritage, whenever a highly complex handling of visual elements is required, featuring high resolution images and interactive technologies.

Product/Service/Technology: Uffizi Touch® Cloud. Uffizi Touch® Cloud is the enabling technology that allows the advanced view of the collection of Uffizi Gallery through ultra high resolution digital images and interactive technologies. 1150 artworks can be viewed and studied in every detail, with features such as zooming and direct selection of an area of interest, virtual measurement, activation of an informative box with art-historic and technical information, side by side comparison between any two artworks of the collection, thematic navigation and a section dedicated to education activities. Thanks to the Cloud platform, the super-high resolution digital images and the enabling technology will be available on any computer or interactive whiteboard and always up to date. Moreover, the product includes 24 masterpieces at a higher resolution, with images between 500 MegaPixel and 10 GigaPixel.

Description: The demo will show the audience a live demo of the product, by simulating an enhanced art lesson based on the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery, illustrating the features of Uffizi Touch® Cloud and the extraordinary quality of the images available through the platform.

Exploring your way with UBILIA®

Product/Service/Technology: UBILIA®. UBILIA® is a cloud/app platform specifically designed for the citizen-tourist as an interface to get services based on geolocalization on mobile devices. Moreover, UBILIA® is a two-sided network, creating a link between users and content providers, enabled by user location. With this app (iOS/Android), the user can have access to information and contents correlated to outdoors and indoors Points Of Information (POI) and enhance the visiting experience of a city or a museum getting proximity multimedia content according to physical position. These content, delivered through a cloud platform, can be cultural-informative, but also touristic and commercial. The app can be updated to include contents linked to any indoor and outdoor location. UBILIA® satisfies users’ need to have immediate information on opportunities in their proximity and offers the same interface for any area and any type of content.

Description: The demo will simulate a visit in the historic city of Florence by using the app UBILIA® and asking the audience to download it and follow the visit on their smartphone.

User Involvement in Software Development Processes with the Help of the CloudTeams Platform

Our researchers work in interdisciplinary teams and combine insights from computer science with questions from other fields. Thus, the institute invents and develops applications tailored to support people in their jobs and to enrich their leisure time. Our specific strength is a comprehensive system design process, from test and validation of concepts to the handover of well-implemented systems.

Product/Service/Technology: CloudTeams Collaboration Platform. CloudTeams is a collaborative software development platform that supports the interaction between software developers and perspective customers:

  • Software developers set up their software project and are provided with the necessary tools for project management and collaboration within the software team and with novel tools for interacting with customers in an privacy-respective manner and for extracting valuable customer data necessary for improving software products.
  • Prospective customers upload, synchronize, and manage their personal data, offering them for specific awards to software teams in an anonymous manner, promoting co-development for better software solutions and achieving shared value distribution.

Description: The demo will start with the video “CloudTeams in 60 seconds” explaining the key principles of CloudTeams. After the video, we will demonstrate a selection of the main features of the CloudTeams Collaboration Platform. Visitors landing on cloudteams.eu browse the public project store and find interesting software projects with running campaigns. These software projects have been published by software developers who request feedback from end-users on their project idea and prototypes. The main tool for the interaction with perspective customers is the campaign; software teams create questionnaires, provide additional information, prototypes, and select their target audience (personas). End-users can follow interesting projects, post ideas, and are notified of a campaign if they match the persona. Software developers evaluate the end-user feedback and ideas, discover market insights, and act on the campaign results. Software developers start ideation and collaboration, derive new requirements for the product, and create new issues. For this, CloudTeams provides lightweight collaboration and team management tools and enables software teams to connect the software project to third-party services for software development and deployment.

Public services running under cloud paradigms: challenges and benefits

In the scope of STORM CLOUDS project financed by the EC CIP, HP has developed an open source platform for supporting the cloudifcation of public services and their hosting. Around this platform, they have created a portfolio of public services in use by 4 cities participating into the project. They have done this in cooperation with the rest of the partners in the consortium.

Description: The purpose of the demo will be to show the potential of this platform to support public administrations in their cloud uptake processes, aiming at accelerating the process. STORM CLOUDS will finish in December 2016. The demo will also focus into opportunities for sustainability beyond the project.

Description: In the demo, a first version of the ARCADIA orchestrator (called ARCADIA Smart Controller) is going to be provided. The ARCADIA Smart Controller consists of a set of components including -among others- the deployment manager responsible for the optimal deployment of applications, the Resource Manager responsible for management of the available multi-IaaS resources, the Monitoring and Analysis Engine responsible for monitoring, extraction of analytics and policy enforcement activities and the Execution Manager responsible for the management of an application, upon its deployment in the infrastructure. Given that a highly distributed application is denoted in the form of a service graph consisted of a set of software components interconnected among each other, placement of a service graph over programmable infrastructure is going to be shown. Policy enforcement activities along with real-time adaptation of the service graph execution based on the applied policies is going to be presented.

At bootstrapping time, access policies are translated into inference engine’s rules based on policy sets and combining algorithms; knowledge is extracted from the context model; and the distributed key management mechanism is bootstrapped as well as all relevant data artefacts (distributed & encrypted). During run-time, any access request is intercepted and analysed; relevant context information is extracted and relevant access control policies are evaluated to decide if the request is granted or not. If the request is granted the process of serving the specific request continues while the application and user key shares are propagated to the trusted DB-proxy.

Automated deployed of Cloud complex applications in Cloud Federated environments: A Bioinformatic case

3DGx: A SaaS for 3D objects design, manipulation, co-creation and rehabilitation

Adapting Service lifecycle towards EfficienT Clouds

It proposes novel methods and development tools to support software developers in monitoring and optimising (minimising it) the energy consumption resulting from developing and deploying software in Cloud environments. The approach focuses firstly on the identification of the missing functionalities to support energy efficiency across all cloud layers, and secondly the definition and integration of explicit measurements of energy requirements into the design and development process for software to be executed on a Cloud platform.

Product/Service/Technology: ASCETiC Toolbox. The ASCETiC Toolbox offers a set of tools all across a Cloud stack (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) to optimize energy efficiency and therefore, offers capital cost reduction and reduced carbon emissions at Cloud service operation level. SaaS layer tools facilitate the modelling, design and construction of Cloud applications; PaaS layer tools provide middleware functionality for a Cloud application and facilitate the energy-aware deployment and operation of the application as a whole; and IaaS layer tools consider the admission, allocation and management of virtual resources.

Description: The demo will introduce the ASCETiC proposed solution from the design to the deployment of an application in a Cloud environment, demonstrating its capabilities at all layers of a Cloud stack. It can be live or recorded, depending on the Internet connection. A short introduction to energy efficiency at software level will be also provided due to its innovative approach.

ENTICE – dEcentralized repositories for traNsparent and efficienT vIrtual maChine opErations

University of Innsbruck is a global Top-200 university and the second largest University in Austria with a long history in distributed and Cloud computing. Besides numerous funded research programs in the area of distributed computing for business and scientific applications, in 2010 an international doctoral school in computational interdisciplinary modelling (FWF Austrian Science Fund – Doctoral Programme) has been established where highly qualified international PhD students are trained in modelling, simulation, numerical mathematics, and techniques for parallel and distributed computing. Apart from interdisciplinarity, an innovative teaching concept combined with strong international networking are key to this program. UIBK has been involved in a large number of national and international Grid and Cloud computing projects including dozens of projects as part of FP5, FP6, FP7 and H2020. Numerous application development environments, programming paradigms and tools have been developed by various groups at UIBK to simplify the effective use of multiprocessor architectures and geographically distributed heterogeneous resources as the bases for the next generation of performance-oriented applications.

Product/Service/Technology: ENTICE – dEcentralized repositories for traNsparent and efficienT vIrtual maChine opErations. Virtualisation is a key technology in Cloud computing that allows users to run multiple virtual machines (VM) with their own application environment on top of physical hardware. Virtualisation enables scaling up and down of applications by elastic on-demand provisioning of VMs in response to their variable load to achieve increased utilization efficiency at a lower operational cost, while guaranteeing the desired level of Quality of Service (QoS, such as response time) to the end-users. Typically, VMs are created using provider specific templates (so-called VM images) that are stored in proprietary repositories, leading to provider lock-in and hampering portability or simultaneous usage of multiple federated Clouds. In this context, optimisation at the level of the VM images is needed both by the applications and by the underlying Cloud providers for improved resource usage, operational costs, elasticity, storage use, and other desired QoS related features. We identify in this projective critical barriers that prevent many users from industry, business and academia to effectively use Cloud resources and virtualised environments for their computing and data processing needs:

  1. Manual, error-prone and time consuming VM image creation
  2. Monolithic VM images with large deployment and migration overheads
  3. Proprietary unoptimised VM repositories
  4. Inelastic resource provisioning
  5. Lack of information to support effective VM image optimization

Unfortunately, current state-of-the-art does not provide any substantial means for streamlined adaptation of distributed applications in federated Cloud environments. The ENTICE environment has been designed to receive unmodified and functionally complete VM images from its users, and transparently tailor and optimise them for specific Cloud infrastructures with respect to their size, configuration, and geographical distribution, such that they are loaded, delivered, and executed faster and with improved QoS compared to their current behaviour. The proposed environment has been focused towards overcoming the barriers that prevent the wide usage of federated Cloud infrastructures and it aims to:

  1. Simplify the creation of light weight and highly optimised VM images tuned for functional descriptions of applications
  2. Automatically distribute VM images based on multi-objective optimisation and a knowledge base and reasoning infrastructure to meet application runtime requirements
  3. Provide interface which enables users to manage their VM images in federated Cloud infrastructures without provider lock-in.

Description: This demo will present the the novel concept of a VM repository and operational environment for federated Clouds named ENTICE. The demonstration will be focused on comprehensive presentation of the novel abilities offered by the ENTICE environment. The demo will start with short presentation on the ENTICE project and the introduced novelties. Afterwards the web based graphical user interface, together with the full set of APIs, will be presented to the users. Comprehensive guide will be given on how to utilize the interface and APIs for VM image size optimization, VM image creation by using recipes and VM image distribution optimization by using the Multi-objective optimization framework. Moreover, the demonstration will also present multiple industry based use-case scenarios of the environment. To be more concrete exciting use cases will be provided for two well established companies: Wellness Telecom and FlexiOps.
The demonstration will also allow for the attendees to test the ENTICE environment first-hand by utilizing the web based GUI and multiple different VM image repositories located in Austria, Slovenia and Hungary.

Risk assessment in multi-cloud
